Storying
The art of storytelling has infused my life with meaning. Aside from what I've published in literary magazines as fiction, or created as script or drama, I am always fascinated by the stories I and the people I know tell ourselves about our lives.
Are we hero or victim? Protagonist or antagonist in the arc of our own personal narrative? How can we learn to recognize those moments of resolution in our lives when we know we have completed one story and are about to begin another?
I feel the speaking in my veins not only of my stories but the stories of my ancestors, my neighbors,
friends, and even--no, especially, my enemies, clamoring to be heard.
I offer you here a story, originally published in the Pacific Coast Journal , Rain Crow, and Anthology magazine, of someone who may have been the first storyteller.
Also, check out the New York-based Literal Latte, which has published my work along with numerous talented storytellers.
Or this book of writers on writing called
Just Open A Vein, where a bunch of us storytelling types were asked to talk about how and why we do what we do.
